The four angles
Why the IC, MC, Ascendant and Descendant sit at the centre of how I read a chart.
When I open a birth chart, I don't start with the Sun sign. I start with the four angles. To me they are the architecture of the chart, the structure everything else hangs on.
What follows is my own framework, developed through years of reading, teaching and research. It isn't the consensus view in astrology, and I don't present it as one.
Two axes
The chart has a vertical axis and a horizontal one.
The vertical axis runs from the IC at the bottom to the MC at the top. I read it as the axis between inner nature and outward expression.
The horizontal axis runs from the Ascendant to the Descendant. I read it as the axis between self and other.
The IC: the soul
For me the IC symbolises the soul, the deepest inner foundation. I don't throw away its traditional meanings of home and roots; I see them as part of the same picture.
The MC: personality and protection
The MC shows the personality and the protective structures we build as we go through life. I sometimes call it a protective mask, but mask doesn't mean false or worthless. Protection often carries real strengths. The question is whether we have freedom in how we use it.
The Ascendant and Descendant
The Ascendant is a gateway: the point of encounter where we step into experience. The Descendant points to what we seek in, and through, other people.
The soul planet
The ruler of the IC sign I call the soul planet. If your IC is in Aquarius, that's Uranus; in Taurus, Venus. Its sign, house and aspects show something about inner direction. Like a compass, it doesn't show the whole route. It gives orientation.
Why it matters
The aim isn't to tear down the personality so the soul can come through. It's a relationship in which the personality can serve the soul rather than keep hiding it.
The birth chart doesn't tell you who you must become. It offers another perspective from which to explore who you are.
